Magic of Liathen

Page history last edited by Will 2 yrs ago

Divine Magic - the most common and broadest category of magic in Liathen.  Alll living creatures in Liathen carry some divine essence, and many people that have devoted themselves to the worship of a god are granted some magical abilities.  The nature of these abilities of course varies from one god to another.  Note that there are no undead in Liathen, so turning checks are used in different ways, most often to sanctify/defile a place.  Turning checks are also useful when fighting spitters.  Also, note that not all divine magic users count as clerics.  For example, some followers of Winken use the sorceror class to wield divine fire.  Game mechanics are always a secondary consideration.

Pattern Magic - The elvish form of arcane magic, pattern magic works by manipulating the patterns of existing things.  A common example of this effect is the manipulation of static electricity in the air to form lightning bolts usable as weapons.  Elves also use it to change shape and control natural forces.

Spirit Magic - The orcish form of arcane magic, spirit magic summons ancestral spirits to perform tasks in this world.

Rune Magic - Practiced by Dwarves.

Illusion Magic - Long linked to fire magic, illusion magic tends to fall outside normal categories.  It is granted by the god Winken, and therefore is practiced primarily by hobbits.
